Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia, located in the archipelago of Society Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. The island has a population of 178,133 according to an August 2007 census.[1] This makes it the most populous island of French Polynesia, accounting for 68.6% of the total population. The capital, Papeete, is located on the northwest coast.
大溪地（法语：Tahiti），又译塔希提，法国法属波里尼西亚最大岛屿，法属波里尼西亚首府帕皮提的所在地，位于南太平洋东部。根据2002年人口普查，岛上有人口169,674人。该岛是南太平洋诸岛中最多华人移居的地方。塔希提岛的佳丽多次在国际选美中赢得奖项。塔希提岛也是著名的旅游胜地，除了有阳光、沙滩等景点，也有不少渡假村。
塔希提人皮肤黑里透红, 体态健美, 性情豪放, 能歌善舞．逢年过节或喜庆日子, 妇女们头戴花冠, 套上鲜花塔希提岛颈饰, 穿上稻草编成的金黄色草裙, 在皮鼓、吉他的节奏声中翩翩起舞, 男人们也聚集在一起争相献技, 表演各种节目。游客们在此期间可以欣赏到表现波利尼西亚历史、风俗、宗教的舞蹈、杂技；可以听到悠扬悦耳的民间乐曲；还可以观看“赛龙舟”和“劈椰子”比赛。
岛上多海滨浴场，海滩优良，适于游泳、泛舟和休息，好像是热带人间仙境。在这里游客还可以乘坐玻璃底的游艇，观赏海底的珊瑚礁和珍奇鱼群。
Tahiti people have reddish dark skin and well-built bodies. They are vigorous and unconstrained, good at singing and dancing. At festivals and celebrations, the women will wear garlands on their heads and necks and dance nicely with grass skirts in the rhythm of drum beats and guitar music. The men will also gather to show their skills and talents. At these events, tourists can appreciate Polynesian history, customs and religions through their dances and acrobatics and hear the pleasant and lingering folk music and watch the “dragon boat racing” and “cocoanut cutting competitions”.
